Therapeutic Movement For Older People

Overview

Everyone can improve their movement and prevent movement problems. Those at risk of developing problems do so because of how they organise themselves to work. Many sit in ways that fatigue the back and neck, hold unnecessary tension, fixate shoulders and have other bracing patterns that add considerable stress to muscles and tendons.

Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI) now known as Occupational Overuse Syndrome (OOS) is a collection of complex and often intransigent symptoms that develop when the body can no longer cope with the effects of accumulated strain. Symptoms can develop over a period of a few months to a few years dependent on ones tension patterns.

The symptoms develop as the end result of a process that could be avoided if a person knew how to move with ease, comfort, the least amount of muscle tension necessary and good functional co-ordination. Our bodily movement is something that is inbuilt. Since our early childhood we have trained our bodies to move. The correct or incorrect way of moving stays with us throughout our adult lives.

We do not think about

  • the way we will lift a foot when we walk
  • how we will sit in a chair, or use a keyboard.
  • how we reach, bend, stand or walk.

We go home all tensed up. Our muscles feel the stress of over use. But that is because we have been going through the right motions the wrong way.

You will learn how to improve efficiency and comfort at work at home and at sports. More comfort working at a desk, computer, or in the garden. More ease when you sit, stand, turn, bend or reach. Greater comfort getting out of a chair and driving a car

This session will, with practice, retrain your body to undergo the correct motions that will make a new person out of you.
